EDLD 506ME Special Education Law for Administrators

This course examines the legal bases of special education policy.  Students will review legal issues and cases in the United States and in the State of Maine. Legal issues of importance to administrators employed in Maine are studied as well.  Special Education law topics include Federal law, state law and regulations of concern to the school administrator,  FAPE (free appropriate public education), evaluation and program development, LRE (least restrictive environment), procedural due process, parental and student rights, special education remedies, and district liability. Students will have the opportunity to analyze case studies of personal interest.  The course also has a focus on best practices and proactive leadership to prevent litigation.
